Angela Rita Hogan

Angela Rita Hogan, 95, of Harpers Ferry, IA, formerly of Postville, IA, was called home to be with Jesus and her loved ones on Thursday, July 10, 2025, surrounded by family.
Angie was born in Monona, IA, on February 22, 1930, and was the youngest daughter of Edward and Josephine (Heck) Auer of Monona, IA.
At a young age, with courage in hand, she ventured out to eastern Pennsylvania with a friend to work. At the request of her mom, she made her way back to the Midwest and worked at Water’s Dairy in Postville – living in an upstairs apartment. One evening, while she and her sister, Eileen, were out at the Heidelburg in Luana, IA, she met Tom Hogan. They danced that night, he drove her home, and the rest is history. On February 9, 1957, Angie was united in marriage to Thomas Francis Hogan at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Postville.
Tom and Angie started their lives together in Postville before moving to the “Burkhart Farm” near McGregor, IA, where they farmed alongside Tom’s parents, Frank and Marie, and his brother Terry and wife, Betty. While on the Burkhart Farm, two children were born: Tim and Julie.
In the Spring of 1964, they purchased a farm north of Postville on Pole Line Road, where they put down permanent roots and welcomed two more children, Patricia and Tom Jr.
Angie had many passions in her life, with her two most cherished being her devotion to her Catholic faith and her family. She was a member of the St. Bridget Catholic Church Rosary Society. As her children grew, she also worked outside the home, including many years at the Coast-to-Coast Hardware Store in Postville. Angie had a love for flowers and landscaping – particularly roses – especially enjoying one of her first being a “Buck” rose, and she spent countless hours caring for her gardens.
Daily prayer was central to Angie’s life and one of her favorite prayers was the Memorare Prayer. Her love of flowers and prayer was a daily calling for her. When asked how much water each rose bush needed, she said that she would say two Hail Marys for each one.
Her enthusiasm for gardening inspired many landscaping projects – often initiated by Angie and lovingly carried out by her husband, Tom...sometimes after a bit of persuasion.
Angie’s baking skills with her cookies and desserts were enjoyed by many and her skill in making homemade bread was consistently accomplished using a ruler to ensure that each loaf had raised to the exact height before baking.
Angie was also a good golfer and an avid sports fan, following the Green Bay Packers and cheering for the Iowa State Cyclones in both basketball and football. She was also an accomplished crossword puzzler, rarely missing a daily puzzle, and there were thousands of rummy card games played with the Schlee family for a half a cent a point.
She is survived by her four children: Timothy (Brenda) Hogan of Harpers Ferry, IA; Julie (Todd) Huddleson of Elgin, TX; Patricia Meyer of Decorah, IA; and Thomas (Tracy) Hogan Jr. of East Dubuque, IL; her grandchildren: Carlee Meyer of Decorah, IA; Lindsey (Jon) Hackman of Dyersville, IA; Lauren Hogan of Phoenix, AZ, Adria Hogan of Monroe, WI; Patrick (Stephanie) Huddleson of Huntsville, AL; her step-grandchildren, Jessica (Evan) Ogden, Burleson, TX; Jamie (Grant) Eddins, Los Angeles, CA; Jacqui (Landon) Redding, Grape Vine, TX; Lauren Jacoby, Irving, TX; Nathan (Jocelyn) Wemett, East Dubuque, IL; Carly Wemett, Port Washington, WI; and great-grandchildren: Liam and Ivy Hackman (children of Lindsey and Jon), Audrey Huddleson (daughter of Patrick and Stephanie), Henry Ogden (son of Jessica and Evan).
Angie was preceded in death by her son, William, in 1960, by her husband, Tom, in 2007, and eleven of her siblings: Leona Voss, George Auer, Korona “Kitty” Ohlert, Loras Auer, Gertrude “Gertie” Rose, Laura Auer, Mary Kathryn Stein, Dorothy Auer, Eileen Johanningmeier, Ralph, and Eddie Auer; and several Auer and Hogan in-laws.
A Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. with a 3:30 p.m. Parish Rosary and a 7:00 p.m. Vigil Prayer Service on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa. There will also be a one-hour visitation before mass time at the church on Wednesday.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 16, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Monona, Iowa, with Father Martin Coolidge as the celebrant.
Burial will follow in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery in Monona, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Postville Food Bank and/or the St. Patrick Cemetery.
Leonard-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Monona, IA, is assisting the family with services.
