Schierholz to be featured speaker at Memorial Day Program to be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church

MAJ Kevin Schierholz, a native of Postville, Iowa, will be the featured speaker at the annual Memorial Day Program Monday, May 29 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall beginning at 10 a.m.

He began his Army career when he enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman in June 1990 and was assigned to the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard). In 2001 he enrolled in the Reserve Officers Training Corps program and served in the Simultaneous Membership Program with the Virginia Army National Guard. Upon graduation from George Mason University in May of 2003, he was commissioned as an Infantry Officer.

Memorial Day Program

The Annual Memorial Day observance will be held Monday, May 29, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Fellowship Hall beginning at 10 a.m. The event is sponsored by the American Legion Post 518.

In lieu of reading the honor roll list of all area deceased veterans, their names will be displayed via a power point presentation beginning at 9:45 a.m. Gold Star Mothers will be recognized as well. 

The high school band will play at various times throughout the program including the display of honor roll members’ names. The high school band is directed by Shauna Marie Johnsen.

Large flags for the Avenue of Flags will be placed in the Postville Cemetery at 5 p.m. Friday, May 26. Prior to the placing of the flags for the Avenue of Flags, individual flags will be placed on Veterans’ graves at 4 p.m. In case of rain, flags will be put up at 9 a.m. on Saturday. Those willing to help should meet at the cemetery.

Flags will be taken down Monday, May 29 at 4 p.m. Anyone willing to help should meet at the shed for instructions.
